Extrin R&D testing to determine offshore calcareous deposit formation

Extrin recently undertook the analysis and testing of subsea calcareous deposits formation on subsea steel mating surfaces.

These scale deposits are obstructing critical areas and the mating of subsea electrical and hydraulic couplers with small tolerances.

The major scaling types were investigated as well as the formation mechanism.  This was determined to be a plating or electro-deposition of calcareous deposit.  The project investigated the following:

1.Reasons behind the scaling issue and the material deposited

2.Review the calcareous deposits at different CP potentials (mV)

3.A review of the materials of construction for Wellhead/Xmas Tree/flow base assembly

4.Control for control and prevention of the scale deposition
